Dear *Your candidate*,
As a resident of *your electorate*, I am writing to share my concern that Tasmania is facing an extinction crisis.
Our island is home to extraordinary native wildlife, iconic landscapes, and globally significant natural values. But this legacy is under threat from invasive species—feral deer, cats, pigs, goats, weeds, and emerging threats like fire ants. These invaders are driving native species toward extinction, damaging farmland, degrading water catchments, and costing Tasmania hundreds of millions of dollars each year.
The upcoming state election is a chance to change course.
We’re calling on the next Tasmanian Government to take stronger action, including:
- Setting a goal of no new extinctions and reinstating regular State of Environment reporting
- Removing protections for feral deer and reducing their spread
- Requiring pet cat containment and resourcing a statewide feral cat strategy
- Declaring feral goats as pests and phasing out ferrets as pets
- Funding a $10 million island eradication and recovery program
- Increasing weed control funding to $20 million over four years
- Boosting First Nations leadership in invasive species management
- Establishing an independent Biosecurity Tasmania with a dedicated environmental biosecurity office
With Tasmania’s island status, we have a natural advantage in eradicating and preventing invasive species. With the right leadership, Tasmania can become a global success story in wildlife recovery.
Please support strong, funded action on invasive species this election.
Kind regards,
